Saint America
sits and does the Times’ crossword
on Mondays, maybe
on Tuesdays—after
that, it’s too hard. Jeopardy
at seven’s good, but
not guys who show off
to the masses. Those who yearn—
the poor, the bankrupt,
the tired, for whom life’s
too hard, even show offs, come
in by ones. She turns
the tube off and puts
the Times down. With her, freedom
is the air one breathes.
