Roy Herndon Smith
There’s no way to say
what we do not know except
to say what we know
is a glass we look
through darkly or face to face
at the one we love
or think we don’t love
and black out or break the glass
anything not to
know what we do know
this other whose face we see
dimly or clearly
or blind ourselves to
is the one we cannot know
behind the face yet
who is the still small
voice closer than the whisper
of unspoken thought
that makes us and all
inside out beyond the glass
behind our faces.
There you are and I
all knowing lost in you have
nothing more to say.
