Lost Causes

Roy Herndon Smith

1

Deserting drowning
babies, we become the cause
we are looking for.

2

In Idlib, they wait
for death by those who, ruthless,
pursue lost causes.

3

Pursuing pleasure,
we desert love and life for
fires, floods, wars, and plagues.

4

Seeking to transcend
this suffering world, we make
this suffering world.

5

Justifying means
with dreams of ends, we end dreams—
oblivion falls.
