masses: slant

painting by marlene vine (marlenevine.com), poem by roy herndon smith

Slant (9312)

the painting tells it
slant, darkness bleeding out from
under and soaking

through the buckling edge
of a field of fire or blood
covering a ground

just barely seen of
dirty white and ashen grey
the stories we sing

of babies falling
like flaming branches from our
warring embraces
