painting by Marlene Vine (marlenevine.com), poem by Roy Herndon Smith
it’s not as if we
didn’t know the familiar
colors would implode
blues, reds, and yellows
careening into mottled
browns, grays, blacks, and whites
shades, tints, hues, and tones
we thought we’d always have names
for when the time came
we did not foresee
exclamatory shards of
pigments tearing us
and the knowable
world to bits of the vital
unutterable
Wonderful, Roy. Which came first, the poem or the painting………

The painting. The only ones thus far in which the poems came first are Psalm and the three Betwixt and Between poems.
